History of Methodism.jpg
History of Methodism in Haiti (1991)

Written at the behest of L’Eglise Méthodiste d’Haïti. Became my thesis for my Ph.D. awarded by the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London). I added two further chapters, almost 100 pages. Then I gave the entire project back to Haiti. This was not my history but theirs. The book was published in Port-au-Prince.

Letters Home (1995)

French translation of the above published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the first Methodist missionaries in Haiti. Published in Port-au-Prince.

The Aristide Factor (1997)

Commissioned by Lion Books. This is the biography of a Roman Catholic priest, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who became President of Haiti in 1991. An analysis of the factors that brought him to power and the events which drove him into exile. There is also a close scrutiny of the place played by faith (and the Church) in this remarkable story.

Worship and our Diverse World (1998)

Commissioned by Stainer and Bell (publishers). An anthology of prayers and meditations, traditional and contemporary, drawn from cultures around the world. About two thirds of the contents of this book were specially written by me.

Voices from the Desert (2002)

Written at the invitation of Rowan Williams then Archbishop of Wales, soon to become Archbishop of Canterbury. Published by Canterbury Press as his Lent Book for 2003. This is a study of aspects of contemporary culture in order to recognise the spiritual yearning of our own times, often disguised but always present.

World without end.jpg
World without End? (2007)

Commissioned by Epworth Press and co-written with my colleague Jennifer Potter. The sub-title says it all. We tried to define the “contours of a post-terrorism world,” a world where national sovereignty and secure borders define the identities of the nations of the world while, at the very same time, the things that shape our destinies (crime, migration, information, financial activity, disease etc.) cross those boundaries with impunity.

A View from the Edge (2010)

My autobiography. Commissioned and published by Continuum Books.

L’Histoire du Méthodisme en Haiti (2017)

Written at the invitation of the Foundery Press. A collection of letters I might have written to various members of my family during my year as President of the Methodist Conference of Great Britain. A discussion of some of the experiences of that highly pressurised year 1994-1995.

Reflexions (2017)

A self-published book offered as a gift to the members of Wesley’s Chapel at the close of my 21-year ministry there.
