SPEECHES

The first three speeches were made on the subject of education. I’ve been a governor and trustee of the Central Foundation Schools of London since 2002 and have chaired its Board of Trustees since 2010.

Speech made in 2013 at the opening of new premises at our Girls’ School in Tower Hamlets. 85% of our pupils wear the hijab to school, mainly members of the local Bangladeshi community.

Speech made in 2016 at the Guildhall in an event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Boys’ School.

Speech made in 2015 at the House of Lords in a debate on an Education Bill being introduced by Michael Gove, at that time Minister of Education.

The next six speeches were all delivered during my time on the Opposition Front Bench (2017 - 2020) and all made in the House of Lords during my time on the front bench. I was my party’s spokesperson for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

I made this speech (on the Internet for Children) during the passage of the Data Processing Act.

Gambling also fell within my remit and this was my contribution to a debate initiated by the Bishop of Saint Albans.

The Archbishop of Canterbury brings a debate to the floor of the House every other year. This was my contribution to one of these.

I was asked to open proceedings on the second day of the Queen’s Speech.

We commemorated the hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War. This was how I closed that debate.

The breadth of the issues I was expected to deal with can be shown by this contribution to the Second Reading of a Telecommunications (Infrastructure) Bill.

Just one more – this time on a familiar theme.

Methodism and Politics.
